Pilot
Bill Henrickson has not been himself lately. The stress of opening the second of his "Henrickson's Home Plus" superstores has been getting to him, and he is struggling to keep up with the mounting demands from his wives and kids at home. Barb, the oldest of his wives, recently returned to substitute teaching, and she needs him to pick up some of the slack with the errands. Nicki, the second wife, wants more money to fix up her house — after all, Barb got to do hers. And Margene, the third wife, with two boys under two, is preoccupied with losing her baby weight — and with Bill's inability to get an erection with her. Things get even more complicated when news arrives from Bill's ne'er-do-well brother Joey that their father Franklin may be meeting his end. He makes a long-avoided return to the rural Juniper Creek Compound where he was raised, only to discover his father foaming at the mouth on the living room floor. His mother, Lois, couldn't pick him up, and she refuses to take him to a hospital ("it just brings more attention to us"), leaving it up to Bill and Joey to sneak him out when she leaves for work. Back in suburban Salt Lake City, Bill's oldest daughter Sarah unwittingly befriends the daughter of a state trooper — putting the family's secret at risk. Ben, his oldest son, wants a new gun. Teenie, the 8-year-old, calls her dad to ask him to get grub for her lizard. And Nicki's two young boys have been clammering to be picked up and played with in the pool. Through all this, Bill manages to make it to the grand opening of his second store, but his celebratory spirit comes to an abrupt end with a surprise visit from Roman, the ruthless head of the Juniper Creek compound and Nicki's father. Roman helped Bill finance his first Home Plus store, and now he wants a cut of the profits on the second. Bill refuses, and the stalemate threatens their relationship — and possibly more. Adding to Bill's anxiety, the hospital calls with toxicology tests on his father. He's full of arsenic, and Bill suspects his mother may be to blame.

Bill seeks protection against a religious faction, Roman "The Prophet" asks Bill's father to act as a go-between, Margene wants a little freedom, and the Hendricksons get together for a family dinner with the Embrys.
Home Invasion
Bill gets a new home security system, Nicki throws a birthday party, new neighbours move in, and Margene meets her mother-in-law. Meanwhile, there's a break-in in Bill's hardware store.
Eclipse
Bill finds a remedy for his recurring bad dreams on a hunting trip with Ben; Barb's enthusiasm for a permanent teaching job puts added pressure on the home front; Nicki's in danger of being swallowed up by credit-card debt; Heather rescues Sarah from a party gone bad.
Affair
Margene is still feeling lonely and decides it's the perfect time to strike up a friendship with one of her neighbors. Nicki begins to wonder if Bill is considering adding to the family, and wonders about his and Barb's behavior lately. Bill and Don decide to go searching for information about Roman in the hopes of bringing him down. Ben tries to cope with the pressures of being a teenager.
Roberta's Funeral
Bill returns to Juniper Creek to attend his father's first wife's funeral and uses the opportunity to propose a deal to Roman. Barb decides to bail out Nicki after a situation at Home Plus. Meanwhile, Lois sees the opportunity for a promotion back at the compound.
Eviction
Bill considers running an expensive advertising campaign, Barb finds out about Nicki's secret, and Margie goes to church with Pam, their neighbor. Meanwhile, Sarah brings home a surprise guest, and Ben goes on a trip with his friends.
Easter
Bill's ongoing feud with Roman results in a glut of lawsuits and a flood of relatives from Juniper Creek, including Frank, who isn't the most sanitary of houseguests. Joey confides in Barb about a change in his priorities. Lois tutors Sarah on the family's history.
A Barbecue For Betty
Bill wants to celebrate a potential breakthrough with Roman and Don's plans for a fourth wife, but Nicki's financial disclosure drives him to distraction; Margene revisits the voting process that brought her to Bill's family while fending off the advances of Pam's friend.

Barb is jolted by a surprise visit from her anti-polygamist sister Margene's depression affects her housework and friendships outside the home; Ben's relationship with Brynn takes another step.

After they're outed as polygamists, Barb decides to leave the family while Bill starts an investigation of who leaked the information. Meanwhile, Sarah attends a support group for ex-Mormons.
The Writing on the Wall (a.k.a. The Writing)
Bill and Don investigate who's responsible for ruining one of the Home Plus advertising signs. Alby gets the police to look into the poisoning case. Meanwhile, Nicki is mad at Bill for his forgetting their anniversary.
Reunion
Nicki goes back to the compound for a family reunion, bringing Bill with her, where they find out the extent of Roman's betrayal of their family. Barb is annoyed by Margene and Ben's behavior. Meanwhile, Alby disobeys his father.
Rock and a Hard Place (a.k.a. Safe Harbor)
Bill and Roman butt heads when Rhonda disappears from the compound. The prosecutor offers Joey a plea bargain in exchange for a confession. Meanwhile, Sarah takes an interest in a boy from her support group.
Vision Thing
Bill attempts to sign the deal on the video poker devices before Roman. Joey and Wanda are having a rough patch and Joey wants Barb to help them. Meanwhile, Nicki's upset with the Catholic summer school Wayne is attending. Finally, Bill is captivated by a pretty waitress.

Margene plots to introduce Barb and Nicki to Bill's next potential wife. Meanwhile, journalists take an interest in Rhonda's story.

Sarah is looking for people who can help with her problem. Bill makes a proposition to Alby. Ana meets two of her to-be mother-in-laws. Finally, Roman's case goes on trial with the verdict hinging on two sisters' testimony.
For Better or for Worse
Ana gives her answer to the family's proposal. Bill gets entangled with a collector who is trying to get a hold of an historical document Alby is selling. Roman invites his children to a meeting at the motel. The teens take the car and head for a road trip to the compound. Nicki quits her job at the DA's office.

The entire family heads east on a pilgrimage to Cumorah, New York, the location of an Joseph Smith shrine.
Fight or Flight
The Henricksons try to deal with the repercussions of the revelations made on the road trip. Alby's wife Laura makes arrangements to improve her status at the compound. Joey plans to marry Kathy but the idea doesn't sit well with all people. Nicki spends time with her boss. Margie receives help from neighbor Pam.
Rough Edges
With funeral preparations underway, Bill pressures the DA to charge Roman with murder. Meanwhile, Bill's casino plans are in jeopardy once again, now by some tribal feud. Wanda gets a visit from her brother. Margie starts her own business. Nicki comes clean to her boss.
Outer Darkness
Bill refuses to ask Nicki to come back home. Barb is in trouble with the church. Nicki runs into a man from the past. Ted tries to squeeze Bill for a share in the casino business but runs into trouble with the Greenes.
Sacrament
Disagreements between Bill and Nicki come to a head. Bill and Roman Grant must work together to retrieve Ted's kidnapped daughter. Margie gets an opportunity to pursue a TV career. Sarah plans a future with Scott. After hearing the news that Roman is free to return to the compound, Alby and his wife Laura take drastic measures to not give up their positions.
