Dexter is a forensic expert in blood patterns who works with the Miami Police Department. He is also a serial killer, who kills people that the police can't bring to justice. He has to hide his double life from his sister, his girlfriend and his co-workers. He is intrigued by a killer who has found a way to kill girls without leaving blood behind.
A serial murderer dubbed “The Ice Truck Killer” leaves clues for Dexter---in Dexter's house; the unit investigates the death of an undercover cop; Deb's excellent police work gets her a transfer to homicide; Dexter sets his sights on avenging the hit-and-run death of a teen whose killer walked.
Dexter's on the trail of a recently released murderer who plans to kill again when he's sidetracked by the Ice Truck Killer's latest crime - a cut-up hooker found in a hockey ice rink.
The Ice Truck Killer leaves severed body parts from his victims at locations that are linked to memories from Dexter's troubled childhood, which begins to get into Dexter's head.
The homicide division is handed an unbelievable lead when the Ice Truck Killer's latest victim is found alive but mutilated; Dexter is on the trail of a person who traffics in humans.
Dexter is called to the scene of the crime at the Castillo junkyard. The Ice Truck Killer has returned Valerie Castillo's body putting Dexter in danger of being caught. A boy is found who witnessed the crime.
The police identify the Ice Truck Killer. However Dexter feels there is something wrong with the suspect. Dexter must also deal with Paul, Rita's recently paroled husband.
Dexter suspects rich women's shrink of murder. When he visits the shrink, he is surprised by a dark secret from his past.
Dexter receives notification that his biological father has recently passed away. Dexter is named as the sole heir of all his possessions including his house. Dexter goes for a weekend away with Rita, Deb, and Rudy.
The Ice Truck Killer is back. He leaves a crime scene that brings back some horrifying repressed memories for Dexter. Paul sues Rita for sole custody of Astor and Cody.
The Ice Truck Killer puts Dexter in a life changing position when he takes someone close to Dexter hostage. Doakes begins to suspect that Dexter's odd behavior is something darker than he originally thought.
Dexter follows clues left for him by the Ice-Truck Killer in an attempt to find the hostage. Paul tries to convince Rita that she and the children are not safe around Dexter.
Things are really beginning to heat up for Dexter: Doakes' suspicions about him are growing, his victims are escaping, and his body dump site has been found. Meanwhile Paul is troubling Rita over the missing shoe and Debra is going through trauma over the Ice Truck killer incident.
Dexter is finding it hard to have closure on killing his brother. There is a new FBI agent to head the "Bay Harbour Butcher" case. Debra is finding it tough to put the past behind her.
Dexter sets his sights on a new victim: a murderer so repulsive it seems only fitting that he's a used-car salesman. Dexter almost admires the man though for his smooth-talking charm and effortless lying, which Dexter knows he lacks himself these days. Dexter's been unable to lie to Rita about his midnight activities, which has her thinking that he's a drug addict. She's threatened to leave him if he doesn't commit to a 12-step program to deal with his supposed addiction. While in this recovery, though, Dexter meets a sexy, mysterious woman named Lila.
Rita's estranged mother visits and senses something is wrong with Dexter. Masuka thinks he's developed a lead in the Bay Harbor Butcher case, which has Dexter concerned. Angel's interrogation of a witness crosses a line.
Dexter finds out that the man who killed his mother, right in front of him, is still alive. When he tells this to Lila, she suggests he face the man, as part of his road to addiction recovery. But then as his sponsor she insists on tagging along.
A copy-cat killer follows the lead of the "Bay Harbor Butcher." Dexter must destroy an incriminating surveillance video.
Dexter manages to get Doakes off his back. He devises a plan to get the police in another direction. Lila and Dex's relationship intensifies, and he has some interaction with Rita and the kids.
Dexter is attacked by the man who murdered his mother. Meanwhile, Lila wants to get closer to Dex, and Debra and Lundy close in on the Bay Harbor Butcher.
Dexter realizes it won't be easy to end things completely with Lila. Dexter tries to stay ahead of the investigations as the manhunt for the Bay Harbour Butcher intensifies. An enemy of Dexter figures out his secret.
Doakes follows Dexter to his next crime scene and shocks him with a revelation about Harry. The Bay Harbor Butcher task force feels they are zeroing in on their man.
Dexter must make a massive decision that will have an effect on all those he holds close. Lila meanwhile is back with a secret to blackmail Dexter.
The Task force believes the Bay Harbor Butcher case is closed, but Dexter still has some trouble to deal with.
Dexter has put his life back together but things may fall apart soon. His new victim is also being targeted by Assistant District Attorney Miguel Prado. Deb has to decide how to handle Internal Affairs, as they want her to turn on her new partner.
Dexter continues the hunt for Freebo, knowing he is still in town after finding Teegan's body. Dexter and Rita must make a decision about her pregnancy. Dexter isn't sure whether he can raise a child. Deb searches for the identity of her body, not knowing the link to the Freebo case. Dexter races to beat the rest of the police to Freebo.
After Dexter meets a pedophile at the grocery store, who's set his sights on Astor, he has to make a decision about his code. Miguel and Dexter both know the new body that showed up skinned wasn't Freebo's doing, and need to find a way to convince the Homicide Squad. Dexter is still wrestling with his potential role in the baby's life.
After a failed marriage proposal, Dexter attempts to convince Rita that he wants more than a financial merger and fatherhood. He wants a family with Rita. Deb lands a new case. Miguel's brother, Ramon, is dead set on finding Oscar's murderer, which worries Dexter and Miguel.
Rita wants Dexter to move in with her and the kids. Miguel gives Dexter his next mission to find the culprit who murdered his two wives for money.
Miguel surprises Dexter by agreeing to his unreasonable request: access to a white supremacist already in custody.
Dexter, who once chose his own victims, is now receiving requests - one from Miguel and another from Camilla.
Dexter's friendship with Miguel grows closer - dangerously closer - when Miguel declares that he wants to make the next kill himself.
Dexter learns that Miguel has struck out on his own and performed his own killing.
Dexter needs leverage against Miguel and goes looking for it - specifically the ring Miguel took from Ellen Wolf as a trophy.
Maria suspects Miguel of Ellen Wolf's murder, and Dexter knows she suspects it. Dexter will have to make his move before Miguel goes after Maria.
As the wedding day approaches, Dexter still has Ramon to deal with. Meanwhile, the Skinner is still loose, and Dexter is his next intended victim.
Dexter has to fit the newborn baby into his complex life. An old serial killer returns to Miami, and Frank Lundy returns to close the case.
Dexter misplaces needed evidence in the Trinity Killer case, evidence which could expose his secret. Meanwhile, Miami Metro must juggle two serial killers at the same time, as the Vacation Murders might bring the city's tourism industry to a grinding halt.
Dexter's neighborhood gets vandalized. The Trinity Killer strikes again, Debra questions her relationship with Anton as she spends more time with Lundy, and LaGuerta and Batista's relationship gets complicated.
Dexter is left home alone and with free time as Rita takes the kids on a vacation which may prove interesting for Dexter in several ways. In the meantime two other relationships are on the line: LaGuerta and Batista debate about their future and Debra's own, as she helps Lundy with the Trinity Killer investigation.
Debra recovers from the shooting but is emotionally distraught from Lundy's death and other life events. Dexter realizes that it was the Trinity Killer and not the Vacation murderer as the rest of the police force thinks. He gets closer to the Trinity Killer than he has before.
Dexter knows it's only a matter of time before the Trinity Killer's latest handiwork is discovered by Miami Metro. He has to work doubly hard to stay one step ahead of their investigation. Debra is shut out from her own case. She considers risking her career and bending the rules in the name of justice. LaGuerta and Batista realize that by playing by the rules they may have painted themselves into a corner. Dexter gleans relationship advice from a most unlikely source when the friction between Rita and Dexter comes to a head.
Dexter seems to have finally managed to balance work, family, and his dark passenger. But he knows the balancing act can't last. A series of murders leads the department to a prominent photographer, prompting Dexter to move him to the top of his list which doesn't sit well with Harry. But Quinn's effort to bond with Dexter poses a problem with hunting the new prey. Meanwhile, Debra returns to work and focuses on finding the Trinity Killer, which Dexter fears will put her in danger.
Dexter goes on a house-building excursion with Trinity, but still doesn't kill him. The team investigates more into the Trinity case and Rita gets close with a neighbor while Dexter's out of town.
Dexter (Michael C. Hall) continues to try to understand The Trinity Killer (John Lithgow) by talking to his family; he discovers that Authur Miller may not have the perfect mask after all. With Dexter out on the prowl Rita gets a little help with her busy household from her handsome next door neighbor, but his motives may not be all that honorable. Debra continues to investigate the Trinity Killer and may be getting a little too close for her own safety.
Dexter thinks he knows the ins and outs of the Trinity Killer until a 10 year old boy goes missing.
Dexter is determined to take care of the Trinity Killer/Arthur Mitchell himself, at least in part to atone for the mistake he made. When Dexter learns that Christine Hill is in custody, he realizes that the police will soon be onto Arthur, so he sets up an elaborate ruse to send them down the wrong path. It all backfires and ends in another death. Arthur also learns his real name and the work he does. Meanwhile, Rita finally tells Dexter about the kiss at Thanksgiving, but isn't quite sure what to make of his nonplussed reaction. Also, Laguerta and Batista are caught kissing on a store surveillance video and Captain Matthews is set on having them both fired. They decide there's only one way to get out of he mess they've created for themselves.
The final challenge between Dexter and Arthur comes. Debra finds out a long hidden truth. Rita admits that her marriage is troubled. Batista's and LaGuerta's relationship must face consequences.
In the aftermath of last season's chilling finale, Rita's death has left Dexter feeling responsible, possibly even...guilty. Unable to deal with the trauma, Dexter makes a drastic decision that will impact everyone around him. Quinn stirs up trouble at the station when he notes that Rita's murder, which is being pinned on the Trinity Killer, doesn't fit his normal murder profile. Things get even more heated when Quinn suggests to LaGuerta that they look at the husband: Dexter Morgan. Meanwhile, Quinn offers Debra much needed support, causing her to see Quinn in a new light.
In his new role as single father, an anxious Dexter tries to get his family's routine back on track, to begin the process of moving on from Rita's death. Dexter attempts to focus all his attention on the kids while curbing his dark urges. But when evidence of foul play falls into his lap, Dexter makes a horrific discovery, setting him on the trail of his next victim. Debra, trying to be the good sister, shares her apartment with Dexter and the kids only to find there's no room for her. Miami Metro has their work cut out when a grisly scene is found in a Venezuelan neighborhood.
Dexter finds himself in a strange new world when he attempts to hire a nanny for Harrison so he can continue to stalk and kill his next victim. Meanwhile, Debra, who takes the lead on a bizarre double homicide, is displeased when Batista suggests bringing in an annoying rookie officer who has her own theories on the case. Things heat up for Dexter when Quinn notices strange similarities between Trinity Killer suspect 'Kyle Butler' and Dexter Morgan.
Dexter catches a mysterious woman who may have witnessed him in the act of killing a killer; Deb has a frightening run-in with a murder suspect in the Santa Muerte homicides; and Quinn uncovers more striking similarities between Kyle Butler and Dexter Morgan.
Dexter tries to convince Lauren to return to Minnesota but isn't having much success. She is intent on finding the other men who abused her and kill them and Dexter realizes that perhaps the only way to save her from herself is for him to do the killing for them. When he realizes she has a bead on Boyd Fowler's former prison cell mate - a convicted rapist - he decides to do the deed himself. He quickly realizes however that the man could not have been one of her attackers. Brenda meanwhile continues her investigation into the rash of be-headings which lead the police to what may be the killers first victims. Lt. Laguerta begins to act strangely and staying out late leading Angel Batista to think she may be seeing someone. Quinn's attempt to contact the Trinity Killer's family forces Laguerta to suspend him without pay. He has other plans to pursue Dexter however.
Striving to bring some normalcy back into his shattered life, Dexter figures the answer lies in finding a new serial killer to bring down, but his quest gets thrown off course when his troubled new acquaintance requires his help. Meanwhile, Batista uncovers a revealing new lead in the Santa Muerte homicides, and Quinn gets a tip about Dexter, but is not sure he can trust his source.
Having decided to help Lumen find the other men who attacked her, Dexter is at a loss when he is called to the scene of a road accident. There he finds a pick-up truck that has disgorged its contents - several formaldehyde-laden barrels containing the bodies of dead women. Of course the women are Boyd Fowler's victims Dexter had discovered in the swamp some time before. The truck is registered to a celebrity, motivational speaker Jordan Chase, who claims that his truck was stolen. Dexter is more interested in Chase's head of security, Cole Harmon, who fits Lumen's description of one of her attackers. Debra meanwhile is still on the Santa Muerte case and Lt. Laguerta agrees to a sting operation using their new informant, Yasmine Aragon. It doesn't all go as planned resulting in several deaths.
Looking to avenge Lumen's abduction and torture as well as numerous other murders of innocent young women, Dexter puts the mysterious self-help guru Jordan Chase along with his devious head of security, Cole Harmon in his cross-hairs. But like many of Dexter's prime suspects, disposing of Chase and Harmon proves to be a more complex and labor intensive task than previously thought. Will Dexter's interest in Jordan's unique program of self-realization help him cope with the death of Rita? Or will it cause him to make a fatal mistake leading to his own demise?
Dexter has now set his sights on self-help guru Jordan Chase and is spending some time with him getting to know him better. His life is turned upside down however with the sudden arrival of his step-daughter Astor and her friend Olivia. They're drunk and have lied about where they are. Astor is rebellious, refusing to tell Dexter what she is up to or why she is acting this way. She is also convinced that Lumen is Dexter's new girlfriend. Lumen has a conversation with Olivia that puts the girls escapade in an entirely new light. When the girls disappear from his house, he fears that Chase is on to them and the girls have been kidnapped. Dexter is forced to reveal to his colleagues that he's been seeing Chase and they also learn about Lumen, who Dexter describes as his new tenant. At the station meanwhile, Debra has been assigned to work in the filing room and comes across some startling information about the barrel girl murders. She also learns about Quinn's suspicions of her brother. Quinn has his own problems with Stan Liddy, who refuses to drop his private investigation into Dexter.
Lt. Laguerta has decided to re-open the barrel girls murder case and assigns a reinstated Debra Morgan and Quinn to arrest Cole Harmon. Of course, they don't know that Dexter has already taken of things. They do find that the men made videos of their attacks. Debra begins putting the pieces together and concludes there is a vigilante killer getting rid of the men who attacked and killed the women. From the blood in the small vial Jordan Chase wears around his neck, Dexter is able to track it to Emily Birch who, to his surprise, is still alive. She's not very cooperative however until Lumen visits her on her own. Emily identifies the fifth man as Alex Tilden and Dexter and Lumen make plans to eliminate him. They don't realize that someone has been watching them.
Dexter and Lumen are trying to figure out how to get Jordan Chase but he catches on to the fact they have been under video surveillance. He manages to trace the equipment back to Joey Quinn, not realizing that Stan Liddy is behind it all. He and Lumen burglarize Quinn's apartment and find some of the photos of them at the marina. Dexter learns soon enough just who is behind it. Debra meanwhile has pretty well figured out the case and tells her colleagues about her vigilante theory: that the killer is probably the 13th victim who escaped and that she is likely being helped by a man. Lt. Laguerta is dubious however. Jordan Chase has conveniently planned to go to Europe on a speaking tour but not before he lays a trap for Dexter and Lumen.
Just as Dexter is about to set off find Jordan Chase, his entire family arrives having decided to travel down from Orlando to celebrate Harrison's birthday in Miami. Cody and Astor have something special to ask him. Having managed to extricate himself from any family obligations from the day, he arrives at the station to learn that Liddy's body has been found and the entire squad is assigned to working on the case. Things quickly deteriorate for Joey Quinn who is taken into custody after they find Liddy's phone and see that Quinn was frequently called on the day he died. Jordan Chase has not yet killed Lumen as he wants to trap Dexter as well and eliminate both of them. Dexter manages to trace Chase to his lair leading to the inevitable confrontation. In the end Dexter, Lumen and Debra will all have choices to make and not everyone will be happy or content with the choices they make.
Life for Dexter is returning to normal. He's taking care of his son with the help of Angel Batista's sister Jamie. He dispatches two EMTs who have been killing patients to harvest their organs and he's looking forward to his high school 20th anniversary reunion. Not surprisingly, Dexter was something of an outsider in school but one girl, Janet, was at least nice to him. She dated and eventually married the schools star quarterback Joe Walker but committed suicide after they were married. Dexter is certain that Joe killed her and his main interest in the reunion weekend is to get a DNA sample from him. Elsewhere, Maria LaGuerta has been promoted to Captain and she and Angel are divorced. They're still friends and she is recommending him as her replacement as Lieutenant. Deb and Quinn are still living together and he is getting ready to pop the question - only to be interrupted in a restaurant in an unusual way. Finally, the entire squad has to deal with the disappearance of a roadside fruit seller. From the evidence at the scene, they think the man may have been disemboweled. When his body washes up on shore, they find something has been put into his torso.
Dexter lines up his next victim, Brother Sam a criminal who claims to have found religion and while still running his body repair shop, gives other ex-cons a chance at rehabilitation. Dexter isn't buying any of it and is certain that Sam will be his worthy next victim. Doesn't quite turn out that way. The investigation into the dead man with the snakes put into his torso advances when one of the students finds heavy metals in their system. The two men responsible for that killing continue their preparations. Deb meanwhile has a day to remember. Still getting praise from her colleagues over the restaurant shooting, Quinn has a surprise waiting for her in the refrigerator. It's left to Deputy Chief Tom Matthews to spring the biggest surprise of all however.
Dexter faces a serial killer from his past; Debra has problems with her new position and Travis with Gellar think of their next move.
The team investigates murders that have a religious undertone to them.
Harrison's illness causes Dexter to reevaluate his religious views. Meanwhile, Homicide begins to investigate Travis and Gellar.
Dexter investigates who shot Brother Sam. Meanwhile,Homicide interrogates the woman who Quinn slept with who is involved in the Doomsday Killer case.
Having avenged Brother Sam's death, Dexter gets some bad news from Deb - it appears the Trinity Killer has returned. to kill his wife and daughter leaver his son Noah as the only survivor. Dexter know that Trinity is lying in pieces at the bottom of the ocean and immediately suspects that Noah may have taken over where his father left off. He sets off for Nebraska to confront Noah accompanied by someone from his past. When he confirms Noah's role in the deaths, Dexter clearly has a choice to make. Back in Miami, the team gets a significant lead when they locate the girl Travis released. But with Dexter unavailable, the squad are missing a key expert to analyze what they've found. Travis stays with his sister and seemingly ends his relationship with Geller. Captain Laguerta embarrasses Debra at a meeting.
Dexter, using what he's learned from Brother Sam, comes a step closer to the Doomsday killers, specifically Travis; Deb and LaGuerta go head-to-head after a call girl ends up dead.
Dexter tries to stay one step ahead of the Homicide Division concerning the Doomsday Killers, while he finds help from an unlikely source; Debra uncovers something unexpected about herself during her therapy sessions.
The mirror-match continues. Travis enlists some new acolytes. Miami Metro gets two new breaks. Dexter finds himself in hot water, confused about what to do with Wormwood.
Dexter finds himself at the yacht where Travis and his accomplices were preparing the next tableau, Wormwood". They quickly realize that Travis is planning a gas attack. Worried that Batista has not been seen since the previous day, Quinn sets off to find him. Travis meanwhile sends Beth Dorsey to Miami Metro homicide with a canister of deadly gas and orders her to meet with Lt. Morgan. Deb has dinner with Deputy Chief Matthews and discusses the case of the dead call girl. The next day Deb realizes that Laguerta is very adept at office politics.
Stuck in the ocean miles from shore, Dexter is rescued by an old boat carrying illegal immigrants to the US. He even manages to render them a service. Once ashore, he heads home hoping to figure out where and when Travis will stage his last tableau. Travis has holed up in a small house and has killed the occupants. While he's away, the police show up and Dexter has something of a surprise waiting for him. Dexter makes it to son Harrison's school recital only to have Travis take the child. Meanwhile, Debra has a plan to catch Travis and gets LaGuerta's support for her plan. Debra also comes to terms with her feelings for Dexter. In his final confrontation with Travis, Dexter has him tied down on his execution table. Someone walks in just as he's committing the deed.
Having been caught in the act of eliminating Travis Marshall by his sister Deb, Dexter has to scramble to come up with an explanation. Deb is understandably shaken by what she's just seen but accepts, somewhat reluctantly, Dexter's explanation that he's suffered momentary madness. As she thinks about it, Dexter's explanation makes no sense and decides to dig deeper. Captain LaGuerta meanwhile is puzzled by a piece of evidence she found at the scene of the Marshall killing. When a member of the homicide squad is killed, Dexter goes all out to stop the killer before he ...

When he shows up on the sidelines of his latest victim's funeral, Deb goes berserk and decides they have to get him at all costs. Dexter decides it's time for him to do what he does best. Meanwhile, the police are still raiding the strip club and owner Isaak Sirko decides it's time to give the police what they want and frames ...

He tries to explain his dark passenger to Hannah but they're interrupted by a man peeking through the window - who turns out to be Hannah's father who has just been released from prison. She's changed her name to Maggie and says she's quite happy. Her husband doesn't appreciate the fact that she's met with Dexter forcing her to take action and for Dexter to help her out. Dexter is certain that Zach Hamilton killed his next door neighbor Cassie, who is found bludgeoned to death in her apartment. The scene suggests that the crime was impulsive rather than planned, as was the case with the death of Norma Rivera. Dexter finds Zach's blood under her fingernails but can't report it for obvious reasons. Zach is in the Keys - he's used his credit card - and Dexter and Hannah set off to find him. What he finds there impresses Dexter but also suggests that Zach isn't the killer. Meanwhile, Dexter is also helping Hannah acquire a new identity ...
Dexter has decided to make a new life for himself with Hannah and Harrison but not before he takes care of the Brain Surgeon.
