The Way Back

Roj Blake meets up with a woman named Ravella, and after assuring her that he has been without food or drink for the last 36 hours is led to meet another man, Richie. Richie and Ravella convince Blake to go outside with them, despite this being a category 4 crime. Once outside they make their way to a meeting of a resistance group led by a man named Foster. Foster tells Blake that like himself, he was once with the resistance but that he was captured and basically 'reprogrammed' so that he would be an example to citizens of the Federation. Foster alos informs Blake that the Viz tapes he gets from his family on the outer colonies are fakes. They were executed on arrival, just after Blake was first captured. Blake is stunned by the news and goes off to be by himself, he witnesses Federation troops approaching the area and watches helplessly as the resistance group, all of whom are unarmed, are mercilessly gunned down. Blake himself is captured a while late, while re-entering the city. Meanwhile, after Blake's capture, Ven Glynd and Morag, the court prosecutor discuss how to discredit Blake. They cannot kill him because he will become a martyr, something for the masses to follw, instead they want to find a way to get him deported to a prison planet. Blake is horrified to learn from his defence lawyer, that he is being tried not for going outside, but instead for interfering with children. Blake tells his lawyer that this is total fantasy and his lawyer agrees to look into it. At Blake's trial he is found guilty and sentenced to deportation to the prison planet Cygnus Alpha. Blake maintains that he is innocent. The lawyer visits Ven Glynd and informs him of his worries, Ven Glynd appears surprised of the news as something like this could only come from high up. he gives his blessing for an investigation. Once his lawyer begins to investigate he discovers certain discrepancies. In the hall of records he discovers that several of the children Blake was supposed to have interferred with, were not at school on the days the attacks occurred, furthermore, they were admitted into the central clinic, suspicious, the lawyer returns to see Blake and gets more information on where the resistance meeting took place. He plans to get some evidence to free Blake and get a holding order to get Blake to remain on Earth while an investigation takes place. In the cell waiting to be taken aboard, Blake meets Jenna Stanys, a smuggler and Vila Restal a thief, both waiting to be taken to Cygnus Alpha. Blake informs them that he hopes not to be going, if his lawyer can get evidence to keep him on Earth... The lawyer and his wife get outside and head to the place of the meeting, once there he videos the bodies he finds and decides to head back, meanwhile back in the holding area, time is up. Blake is led onto the ship with the other prisoners. The lawyer and his girlfriend have been captured and killed by Federation troops, Blake's last hope seems to have gone. On board the transport, an officer is giving a pep talk to the prisoners, informing them what happens when they disobey orders. Blake doesn't hear the officer speaking to him and as punishment is locked into his seat by restraining arms. The officer tells Blake to take a last look at Earth as he'll never be back. Blake says that he will return, one day.
