After Drs. J. M. Christiansen and John Thackery fail to save a woman and child during placenta praevia surgery, Christiansen commits suicide. Thackery takes his place as leader of the surgery staff. He believes Dr. Everett Gallinger would make an excellent deputy, but he is asked to hire Dr. Algernon Edwards, who is black. Thackery refuses, and the hospital's benefactor pulls the funding to install electricity. Hospital manager Herman Barrow hires Edwards. When a patient develops a bronchial infection after surgery, Thackery is needed again. Nurse Lucy Elkins finds him at his house, suffering from cocaine withdrawal. She injects him, and he returns to operate with a revolutionary clamp that he has made. Afterwards, he asks Edwards to resign, but he refuses. Electricians then begin installation.
